We were discussing how much people use math in their lives. I explained to the kids that math is in things they never even thought it was. I told them that Architects and builders and engineers use math. They had a hard time understanding how. So, for an activity, I gave each child some toothpicks and some candy and challenged them to plan and construct a structure. We talked about making sure it had a firm foundation before they could build on top of it. I asked our Principal Mr. Winward, our counselor Ann Lewis and our Behavior Tech Sharma Armstrong to judge the results. Each child won an award. It was very interesting and they got a whole new appreciation for the importance of math. Thank you to our judges. Here are the awards the kids won.
