R-controlled Pirate Day

Learning about r-controlled vowels is tricky. We learned that when a vowel is followed by an r, the r becomes very loud and bossy (like a pirate) and you can only hear the r when you say the word and not the vowel. Some examples included car, stir, guard, fur, fir, corn, herd etc.  On Pirate Day we completed word- sorts with all of the r-controlled vowel words, we took a spelling test, we read a Pirate Book and Ms. Melanie's husband Kevin helped us go on a treasure hunt.  We split into two teams and search the building for clues. We found the treasures hidden in our classroom.  Good reading, good fun! Thanks Mr. Kevin.  Argggggg, Mateys!
