Hello World of Art

One of the subjects we focused on at the end of the year is getting to know, experience and understand the World of Art.  We learned a lot about different kinds of art like music and dance and different ways to express our feelings through art.
We also studied four different artists and their lives and their styles and compared and contrasted them.  Each of the second grade teachers taught about one specific artist.  The kids write a paragraph about them and their style.  Then we had an Art Day.  Each child got to experience producing a piece of art using the style of each of the artists we had studied.
Another special activity we did was we brought in a professional artist.  Her name is Victoria Mendoza Hyde.  She taught the kids about Frieda Khalo, who is an amazing artist and puts a lot of symbolism into her artistic style.  Each student got to use charcoal and grease pencils to create a portrait using symbolism.  They were amazing.
The whole day was impressive.  Ms. Dingman taught about Eric Carle and his use of tissue paper in his art.  Mrs. Khang taught about Pablo Picasso and his blue period and remarkable use of shapes. The kids each made a mask using clay.Ms. Melanie taught about Jackson Pollock his splatter painting using the drip technique.  The students worked together to paint huge murals in the Pollock style.  It was amazing learning and the art produced was remarkable.
