Constitution Day

We learned that our school is named after Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence, and is why we celebrate the Fourth of July.  We also learned about the American Constitution. We learned that it is a remarkable document and that it is the longest lasting legal document in any country's history in the world.  We learned that it was written by our forefathers and is still how Americans live today. We learned that its most important words are We The People and that everyone in America is important and that every voice matters.  We wrote our own Classroom Constitution because everyone in our class is important and every voice matters..  We all agreed that it should say "We The Children Of Miss Melanie's Class will live by the Golden Rule which is Treat Others The Way You Want To Be Treated.  We used an actual feather pen, like the signers of the Constitution did, to sign our Constitution which is now hanging in our classroom.

Mrs. Ann Teaches Us About Team Work.

Our School Counselor Mrs. Ann comes in bi-weekly to teach us about life skills.  We have worked on positive behavior activities and done team building activities.  We are really lucky to have her teach us such great things.

Patriots Day

On September 11th we celebrated Patriots Day and remember the tragedy that happened 14 years ago. We discussed how sad that day was a how torn apart our world became.  We talked about how Americans pulled together to become an even stronger, better nation.

The Nutrition Plate

Dragon Gets By is a story about a character named Dragon who makes really bad nutrition choices. It is a fun, silly, circle story. Then we learned about the importance of The Nutrition Plate and how much it matters to keeping our bodies healthy.  First, we separated food into the five different categories: fruits, vegetables, dairy, proteins and grains.  Next, we cut up newspaper ads and divided the food into the correct sections of the plate.  We worked in small groups to correctly fill up the plates.  Last, we checked our lunches to see how many food groups were represented and how healthy they were.

Listen To Me Read

One of the tools that helps us become better readers is actually listening to ourselves read.  We use pvc pipe phones to check our fluency and pronunciation and inflection.  It is really fun to hear ourselves read.
