Learning about r-controlled vowels!

To understand how bossy the letter  'r' works when it comes after a vowel, we had Pirate Day.  Pirates are also bossy and won't let vowels make a sound.  Most vowels followed by an 'r' can't be heard. Examples would include: star, stir, her, store, fur.  You can't hear the vowel because the 'r' is so bossy.  "Arrrrgh" mateys.  First, we completed a word sort with r-controlled vowels.  Then, we did some addition and subtract Pirate math.  Last, we went on a treasure hunt.  The kids had to work as a team to follow the clues to find the treasure.  Thank you Miss Jan and Mr. Mustache for being the Pirate captains.

We Do Love Green Eggs and Ham!

Dr. Seuss Day was a blast.  We worked together to put Dr. Seuss's stories in order, beginning, middle and end.   We learned a lot about rhyming real words and made-up words.  We wrote a biography about Theodore Geisel.  We predicted whether we would like Green Eggs and Ham.  We cooked them right in our classroom.  They were a delicious hit.
