Code.org

We had the opportunity to have some ladies come into our class and put all of the kids on a website called Code.org.  It is a tremendous chance for the kids to gain some amazing skills in coding.  When the kids are finished with Lexia, which is our reading program, they will get to practice coding.  It is the future appearing right in our classroom.

Who is La Bafana?

During Christmas we learned about a good witch named La Bafana who lived in Italy hundreds of years ago.  One day three kings came to visit her to see if she knew where the newborn Baby King was.  They asked her if she wanted to accompany them to see the Baby King.  She said "No" because she needed to stay home and sweep her floor.  Soon after the Kings departed she realized she had made a mistake and tried to follow the them but she could never find them and never got to see the Baby King.  Now, on January 6th, she flies through the skies of Italy bringing gifts to children to see if she can find the Baby King.  We wrote this story and made a La Bafana.  She visited our class on January 5th and left each of the children a book.  We read the book together.  Wowzers!  Our kids are becoming very good readers.

In Our Opinion...

We have been learning about opinion writing.  Since we have a new principal, we thought it would be fun to write our opinion about what makes a great principal.  We bound the pages into a book and gave it to Mr. Thomson.  He was very gracious and seemed to love the book.  Each child wrote their opinion in a complete paragraph with a topic sentence and supporting facts.  They also drew an adorable picture.  If Mr. Thomson takes their advice he will be the best principal ever.

Thank you 5th Grade Big Buddies

Our Big Buddies came to our class and read with us and then they helped us make a Christmas tree ornament that was a tiny, little  winter hat.  They were adorable.  It was so much fun.
